It is widely believed that anatomy is the lesson that determines the validity of medical studies. In the western world and especially during the Middle Ages, anatomists were – and in fact, still are – the people who have the right to explore the human body, seeking its secrets. However, anatomy often disrespects the human body, because it dismembers it and also because it maintains a static view about its structure. These two elements characterize modern medical mainstream: On the one hand we have dissections, and on the other hand a mechanical, static perception, where every organ is considered an independent entity (hence the various specialties, like hepatologist, neuroscientist, etc.)
This class will present the detailed anatomical descriptions of western anatomists, for they contain Knowledge. However, this will be done in the light of the ancient medical systems, for they contain the respect and sacredness that is due to the human body. Thus, all the systems will be described through books of western anatomy, but through the prism of the yin / yang theory. Anatomy (structure – yin) will be taught along with physiology (functioning – yang). Therefore, students will learn that matter is inseparable from movement.
